Um, it may have something to do with you being a (ex-)hamster:
Hamsters, jet lag and viagra (sorry, subscription to full text required).

BB is pretty good on bots but needs to be watched at first as it can also block some feed aggregators unless their IP address is added manually to BB's whitelist.

40,000? That's a fair old whack. I'm no expert but the volume might be because of the number of inbound links you get.

I saw some passing references to BB last night and meant to look into what it does but it had completely slipped my mind. Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully it'll cut down on your problem too.

I use Akismet but, due to the amount of spam comments I get, I can't really measure false positives.
Being a bit naive when I installed it, I didn't think to check too frequently.
However, after about a year since installing it, it claims it has caught over 40,000 ! spam comments or what it defines as spam.
My blog is hardly a discussion blog, so I don't expect many comments but I didn't think it would attract so much spam.
One thing you might want to install pretty quickly is the bad behavior plugin.
I've only just installed it, so can't comment on its efficacy, but if it does work, it could block many spam robots which, in turn will reduce the amount of spam comments your site will attract.

Akismet was the other option I considered and I might give it a try. I'll give SK a go by itself for a while to see how it works out. So far so good. Since install, the two spam attempts have been caught and the four legit comments went straight through.

Good to know that you can run them together though if needs be.

I started out running Akismet and Spam Karma side by side, to see which worked best, and found that not only are both very good but that they happily co-exist without causing conflicts.

So I've left them both on, but tend to manage spam via Spam Karma because I prefer the additional detail and control it gives over Akismet.

I use Akismet which is excellent and hardly ever gives me false positives - worth a look if you decide you don't like the other one.
